Stand By Me

When the night has come

And the land is dark

And the moon is the only light we’ll see

No I won’t be afraid

Oh, I won’t be afraid

Just as long as you stand, stand by me

– Ben E. King

Last Friday, after work, I drove down to Nana’s house in Charleston for the weekend.

I have made that trip hundreds of times. I know the roads backwards and forwards. I am familiar with each of the 252 miles of countryside that stand between our homes. I have spent weekend, and week, and summer, and Easter, and Thanksgiving, and Christmas after Christmas on those roads. I have counted down the slender green signs until exit 199 a million times. I am more comfortable with those interstates and South Carolina roads than I am my own county’s. Read More

Mama’s Broken Heart

Wish I could be just a little less dramatic

Meet Virginia
Posted 16 July 2013 / By MC / Archives/ Miss Clariss Musings

She never compromises,

Loves babies and surprises,

Wears high heels when

She exercises

Ain’t that beautiful

Meet Virginia

Here, at Big Blue Box, we have thousands of employees. Every day, I share elevators with Project Managers, and nod to Executives, and say, “Hello,” to Janitors. I hold doors for people I do not know, I make small talk with those I have barely met, and I rub elbows with the very men and women who hold my future in the palm of their hands. I am polite, and cordial, and witty – yet, not too abrasive (I hope…). And I would like to think I have a face one would remember (although I always err on the side of – no. absolutely no one remembers me. ever.)…

But today I had a humbling experience… Read More

Same Love
Posted 12 July 2013 / By MC / Archives/ Miss Clariss Musings

We press play, don’t press pause

Progress, march on

With the veil over our eyes

We turn our back on the cause

Till the day that my uncles can be united by law

When kids are walking ’round the hallway plagued by pain in their heart

A world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are

And a certificate on paper isn’t gonna solve it all

But it’s a damn good place to start

No law is gonna change us

We have to change us

Whatever God you believe in

We come from the same one

Strip away the fear

Underneath it’s all the same love

About time that we raised up

– Macklemore

Does drinking bottled water make me an Earth killer… just because drinking water that goes through pipes and straight into my cup creeps me out?

Does shopping at Target make me a big-box bitch… just because I am on a budget?

Does listening to hip-hop music make me a male chauvinist… just because I like songs with soul… just because I am amazed at the talent it takes to fit phrases, beats, and messages together to make a song that actually means something… just because I love words.

Okay, so what about this one:

Does eating at Chic-fil-A make me a bigot… just because I like their chocolate chunk cookies? Read More

Take It Easy

Well I’m a runnin’ down the road

Tryin’ to loosen my load

I’ve got seven women on my mind

Four that wanna own me

Two that wanna stone me

One says she’s a friend of mine

Take it easy, take it easy

Don’t let the sound of your own wheels

Drive you crazy

Lighten up while you still can

Don’t even try to understand

Just find a place to make your stand

And take it easy

– The Eagles

Into The Ocean
Posted 3 July 2013 / By MC / Archives/ Domestic Diva/ My Little Lovey Dog

I want to swim away but don’t know how

Sometimes it feels just like I’m fallin in the ocean

Let the waves up take me down

Let the hurricane set in motion, yeah

Let the rain of what I feel right now, come down

Let the rain come down

– Blue October

A couple of weeks ago, after I got home from work one day, Sonny and I were in the back yard playing when three little girls in bathing suits came up to my fence. “Hey,” one of them said, “can we play with your dog?” I thought for a second and said, “Sure, you can play with him. Just be sure not to open the fence when I’m not here.” I slowly opened the gate and each little girl filed into my yard dropping wet towels as they passed. Read More
