Christmas has changed drastically for our family over the last ten years.

Up until I was sixteen, we spent every Christmas in Charleston. As soon as school let out, we were on the road and headed home. Some years, depending on who was getting what for Christmas, Momma and Dad would have to rent a U-Haul to get all of our gifts down to Mimmie and Nana’s. And every Christmas Eve, we alternated grandparents’ house, but magically Santa still knew which house to visit.

Our family of five shuffled from house to house for days. As kids, Bubba, Mace, and I loved it. We loved the excitement. We loved spending time with our grandparents, our aunties and uncles, and our little cousins. Of course, I still had to split time between here and there, but that just extended Christmas all the more for me.

We were different than most kids in our classes – we weren’t from around here – we spent Christmas far away with family we didn’t get a chance to see that often. So Christmas was an extra special time for all of us… for more than just the typical reasons.

boyswillbeboysA couple of months ago, I wrote a piece that was intended to be kind of a “girl’s guide to getting it right.” It… being life. Ms. Jackson was a hit. Everyone seemed to love my 25 little nuggets of wisdom. Woo! Girl power!

But over the past couple of days it suddenly occurred to me, “Who is writing down the ‘guy’s guide to getting it right?'” Who is taking the time to write down the ends and outs of manhood – the “dos and don’ts” of being a dude? The week of Thanksgiving was a rough one for those of us here in Miss Clarissland.
